Chapter Eleven

“Organic Oregon blueberries,” Sarita calls over her shoulder; clouds stream from her mouth with each word. It’s all she can do to keep her teeth from chattering as she leans farther from the stepladder in the deep freezer to get a better look at Sucre Coeur’s frozen berry stash. “Two ten-pound boxes. My plan is to have you make Craig’s scones this week—those are always a bestseller—so write down another couple of boxes to order just to keep the stash going.”

“Say please,” Tash says, with the prim reproving tone of a mother.

“Please,” Sarita says with a grin. She hops down from the ladder; her boots crunch on the icy freezer floor. “That’s it, right?”

Tash scans the inventory list on her clipboard; her green eyes narrow as she checks things off. “Did you want to order more raspberries too? It’s the same supplier as the blueberries.”

Sarita places her hands on her lower back and stretches backward with a groan. “Ugh, I forgot. Um, yeah. Let’s go ahead and get a couple of boxes of those. I didn’t see any in the freezer, and you’ve got that raspberry cream wedding cupcake arrangement coming up during your management rotation.”

“Don’t remind me.” Tash puts down her clipboard and flexes her fingers to get the kinks out as she follows Sarita from the freezer. “God, why did I have to get my rotation and the Hamilton-Bosch wedding at the same time? Why does Lindsey Hamilton want that weird cupcake tower and cake layer hybrid sculpture whatever it is? Why is her entire wedding circus-themed?”

Sarita bites back her laugh. “What’s that last question have to do with her cake choices?”

“Nothing, I just think it’s weird. How are you going to decorate the cupcakes to fit the theme, though?” Tash rumples her red hair and frowns.

“We’ll arrange the cupcake tower in a shape like a circus tent. You’ll bake the cupcakes in striped cups, plus the top cake layer and some extra layers so I can sculpt a tent-top out of cake and frost it to match.” Sarita can’t help her grin of pride. It took significant gentle coercion to get the bride to commit to a vision for her cake in their consultation. And then once agreed-upon, Sarita had to figure out how to build the damn thing so she could decorate it. If she can pull this off, it’ll be the best cake she’s built yet. “The groom’s cake is a double layer, graduated tiers of chocolate with ganache, and I’ll decorate the top of it with circus rings and sugar animals.”

“That’s what I don’t like about the circus. All those poor animals. A wedding that celebrates that is in poor taste.” Tash’s pretty face twists into a scowl, and she snorts with contempt. “Do you think the groom is going to dress as a ringmaster?”

Sarita laughs. “I don’t think they’re going that far. Just the cake and the decorations. And this might make you feel better.” She casts a smile at Tash as they walk through the kitchen.
